Every iMac should really have an external for backup anyway. My last bit of advice is to get that external.a 246GB is a great boot and it allows you to use the internal partitioned into two drives for a mirror backup and data drive. It's still better than running Windows (I do have parallels as well as a PC tower!).

But Steve Job's vision won and it's my loss and I'll deal with it as best I can. I would so appreciate a 'mini' MacPro like an imac that you could easily open with a good fan and some room for externals. I have five external drives in three enclosures, one of which is an open 'enclosure' that lets me swap bare backup drives in and out. In your case I agree that an external boot will be a good solution but it does mean more junk on the desk. The fastest solution is an SSD in a Thunderbolt enclosure and a close second (and much less expensive one) is an SSD in a USB 3 enclosure. Your most convenient option which will give you a very nice speed bump is to use an external SSD. I only bought an iMac because the MacPro line languished so badly and if my machine was stolen tomorrow I'd replace it with another 2011 refurb or used iMac. This is especially true if your 2012 is the late 2012 model which it sounds like it is. I much prefer Mac OS but have always preferred Woz's vision of machine that can be tinkered with.
